No midi recording in Metro from synth.

Postby Scoot » Sat Nov 15, 2003 10:49 pm

Just blown the cobwebs off my external synth after a long time of mucking around with soundfonts.

I was quite happily playing and recording and then did a little bit of mucking around with settings and now I cannot record midi from my external synth.

One of the adjustments made was the midi config in the AMSetup.
Everytime I went to a different config or got Metro to rescan for midi devices in the midi setup, the midisport 2x2 would go offline.

Now I would like to know if you're suppose to have the midi interface channels (1-16) all blue or all white (clear) in the AMSetup.
Also should the synth be all blue or clear?

Should general midi be on or off?
Should midi machine control be on or off?
I assume clock and time code can be off.

Do I need a Sysex ID for the synth?

G4 sawtooth/10.2.6
All recording criteria in metro is on.
R is hilited on the track to record.
I can draw in notes and my synth can play them back.
I can hear my synth through the piano roll on the graphic editor.
I can select different program names and hear the instrument change.
Midiman connected to a USB port on the back of the mac not on the keyboard.

I have thrown away Metro's prefs and started from scratch.

I'm beginning to think the midiman has died in the synth to computer direction.

(is there a midi signal tool out there so I can see if I'm getting communication in both directions?)

There is a well known bug in the Midiman driver that takes the device off-line when a MIDI reset is performed. This is true in both AMS and in Metro. Note that they might have a new driver that fixes this issue. In the meantime do not use reset.

The channels should be blue to be recognized and if you are using Panther you may need to create Outputs manually as opposed to using the 'make outputs refelect studio setup document' option.

Even 'online' I can't get it to work so I think it's broken........maybe a power spike or something or it didn't like my tune! :(

Verify your output ports are set correctly in your outputs or rebuild your outputs in Metro. This is especially important for older documents or if mucking around in AMS while using pre Metro 6.1.0.4 versions. To verify outputs, go to the mixer window and double click on one of the output names. The output port is shown in the ensuing dialog.

If you are using Panther, there is a new test studio button in AMS (Audio MIDI Setup) that is very useful in verifying your hardware is setup correctly.

Output ports look fine.

This shouldn't stop me from seeing midi data appear in the graphic editor after recording. It just wouldn't be heard on play...... surely.

I am hitting keys and recording nothing and nothing is appearing in the graphic editor.

I know midisports USB light pulses...........but does the IN light meant to always be on? The OUT light is only on during data.

This midisport has always behaved that way.......seems odd.
Did I get a lemon?

In AMSetup I am receiving and transmitting on all 16 on both the synth and the interface........(they are all blue).......and nothing else is set/ticked.

In Metro Midi Setup I have it set to
Record from - Yamaha (which is port A on the 2x2)
Receive sync from - blank
Send sync to - blank

If you have panther you will get a sound played in test studio mode (AMS). Otherwise I recommend powering off your computer. Let it nap for 5 seconds and then power it on again. Of course, shut down is the way to go. See if that helps.

Scoot looks at Jerms reply and thinks.......nah that ain't gonna work.....

well it blimmin well did.

Now my question is why does it work?
Are you reseting ports by shutting down the computer?

It's almost unheard of in this modern OSX age......when most of the time you walk away and just sleep the computer.

Cheers Jerm.....now I don't need to go buy another interface. phew!

That goes without saying.

The midi 'in' light always on is an OSX only problem too.

Panther & Midiman 2X2

Postby fastlanephil » Fri Nov 28, 2003 11:43 pm

I got my Piano & Proteus 2000 going in OSX 10.3.1 with my Midiman 2X2 and I think it still works. Looks like there is Midi thru now by plugging all the units up to the same out port in the Apple midi setup which means you can now make due with just a midi in and out for up to I believe a chain of three. I never tried it in 10.2 so i'm not really sure if it is a new feature or not. There is also Help for the Audio Midi Setup which seems to be online(slow).

M-audio still just shows a new driver released on 1/20/03.

Upward and onward!
