I was just checking out Apple's new iBook G4's online. Seems like another good possibility, since they have G4 chips running at 800MHz, 933MHz, and 1GHz respectively. No option for a hard drive spinning at 5400 RPM until you reach the 15" Powerbook though. If I had my druthers, I'd get the Powerbook.

In my continued use of the iBook 600MHz, I did run into a problem recording audio to the internal drive, but not all the time, and I don't think it was due to the Quatrro. If anything I suspect the slow HD. I've had no problems recording to an external firewire drive (120 GB, 7200RPM), which is a great option if you can swing it. It does however add to the clutter that you have to tote around if you do location recording.

heres a follow up... i recently switched computers. an i book 700mhz G3 to a powerbook 1Ghz G4. i am now using metro G4 and the difference has been absolutely amazing!.. i have none of the problems i encountered with using the older computer. i am loaded with plugins and audio files and i get none of the hang ups i was seemingly getting used to dealing with. the G4 processor has made all the difference in dealing with audio. i am aware that the newer ibooks are now G4 but went with the smaller powerbook due to the 512k L2 cache over the ibook's 256k L2. i can now feel the true power of metro and proper digital audio recording.
side note: i am now using the powerbooks internal line input and output over the imic. i have found the audio quality to be equal. a nice improvement over the ibooks lack of input and horrible internal output jack.
