Soundfont switching

Postby Scoot » Sat Oct 25, 2003 6:58 pm

Starting with no files open in metro.

mission 1
********

- drag a DLS music device across to the effects window
- click on the soundbank file button and select a drum kit

In the graphic editor the Port is DLSMusicDevice and no bank or pgm is visible or selected.

The drums can be heard by dragging the mouse across the piano roll on the left.

by selecting a different soundfont in the effects window, with the soundbank file button, a new drum kit can be heard mouse dragging across the piano roll.

So far so good. :-)

mission 2 starting from scratch
********

- drag a DLS music device across to the effects window
- click on the soundbank file button and select a drum kit

open - modify outputs and busses
add 1 output to the DLSMusicDevice port starting with channel 10
ok

piano roll doesn’t play so you go to the port in the graphic window and make it the one that you just created and now you can hear it. no bank or program selected or visible.

pick a different kit by clicking the soundbank file button in the effects window.

the new soundfont is not playable on the piano roll........even by selecting a visible bank and program number for it.

changing the port back to DLSMusicDevice like it was in mission 1 doesn’t play it either

If you go back to the first soundfont from mission 2, it plays the first soundfont just fine.

I guess the question is why are soundfonts not changeable once you select an output for them?

If it's not supposed to be like this, is it related to Sean's problem with names and numbers?

It is 6.4 QT, Metro 6.1.0.3 and Jaguar 10.2.6

I am really not understanding a) what the problem is and b) what you are trying to do.

It is possible that you must select a bank and a program before you get sound. Channel 10 is also a bit weird I think.

I just assumed channel 10 was the drum channel.

I am trying to select another soundfont.......and if I setup a output for the DLSMusicDevice, the soundfont cannot be changed....there's silence on the piano roll.

They play fine and can be changed without setting an output to them which is the way I am getting around it.
The only thing about doing that is in the tracks window they are all named DLSMusic Device, DLSMusic Device1, DLSMusic Device2.

not a big problem really.

I am still not understanding. What do you mean by select another soundfont?

changing the soundfont by going into the effects window, click on the long button between "soundbank file =" & the reverb button, bringing up the open dialpg open and choosing a new soundfont.

that is selecting/changing a soundfont.

adjusting/setting the bank or program numbers to a visibly defined one for the new soundfont does not locate the sounds available of the second soundfont.

*************
How is a soundfont setup for use?

I assume when you place a soundfont in the effects window it is bringing it into ram to be used.
So if you replace the soundfont with another I assume it is flushing out the old one to put the next on in it's place in ram.

Maybe with an output assigned to the DLSmusicdevice, when the replacement happens, it's not bringing the second one into ram but rather turning off the first soundfont and recovering it when you reinstate it from the open dialog box in the effects window.

It is currently bahaving differently to just importing in a soundfont and NOT allocating a output bus to it.
