USB audio interface

Postby fastlanephil » Wed Oct 22, 2003 11:27 pm

I'm probably going to buy one of the G4 ibooks(no audio in) and want to know which, if any usb interface for under $100 works with software audio through.

Just make sure the USB interface has its own driver and does not use Apple's. (Unless of course Apple changed theirs for 10.2.8 or 10.3)

M-Audio Transit.

Postby fastlanephil » Thu Oct 23, 2003 1:42 am

Looks like the m-audio Transit at $79.00 should do the job. The review talks about the drivers that ship with it worked fine. I'll keep my trusty iMic for back up.

Thanks!

Does anyone know the state of software thru with Apple's driver in 10.8 and/or Panther? If you don't need the optical i/o, the iMic (which doesn't have its own driver) is half the street price of the M-Audio Transit, and seems to work well. (I wonder why audiomidi.com doesn't list it :?: )
PS:  I'm still a bit unhappy about the flakiness of the M-Audio MIDI driver 3.1---where it sometimes, quite inexplicably, it takes several tries to get my OSX 10.2.4 Audio MIDI Setup to show the M-Audio 1x1 as alive. So their "Transit" isn't too tempting until they show a little better support.

I've used a Midisport 2x2 for a couple of years now with little or no problems. Definately more probs while using OS9. Can't complain at all in 10.2.8 (Midi driver 3.1 also)
Am looking at an audio interface very soon -
1. M-Audio 410 - fairly high price. Some dubious experiences at present
2. M-Audio Duo - Very cheap, possibly obtainable s/h at €180 - 24bit/96khz quality etc. Seems? to work fine for people. Anyone here got any experiences to share? Does USB audio work?

Well I bought a 2x2 midisport cause it was the only 2x2 that was available to me at the time.
I am now coping with the quirks........and don't really want to go to 10.3 in case I lose my hard drive email etc. in the transition.

If I was to get another interface it would probably be a edirol.

Transit

Postby fastlanephil » Mon Nov 24, 2003 1:08 am

I tried going through my Griffin Technologies usb hub with the M-Audio Transit and got a low power notice. I guess I need a powered hub for it(could switch with the one in my office maybe) or use the free usb port on my iBook G4 and route everything else through the Griffin usb hub. Also it seems Panther is different with midi ports and devices than Jaguar was. It looks cool but looks can be deceiving.
