Metro and Future OS9 Support??

Postby Scoot » Sun Oct 19, 2003 9:20 pm

Metro is very unique for a number of reasons.
One of them is that even new versions still work under OS9.

Shouldn't there be a point when new Metro versions only work in OSX?

My original G4 doesn't exactly run GoLive and Photoshop quick enough in X so I run those in 9, but I've never considered OS9 a serious crash free system for audio once Jaguar arrived........there were just too many things that could hang it like outdated OMS while 9 kept on going up in version numbers.

By not being held back by OS9, Metro could become even better quicker!

Any other views out there?

(no offence to Jerm's work or OS9 users (I am one) but even Apple left that scene well over a year ago.....and classic's starting to look like it's next).

OS9

Postby fastlanephil » Wed Oct 22, 2003 11:19 pm

Yes!! Today Apple wittled down the OS9 bootable macs to a lowly G3 ibook and a 1.25 & 1.25 dp G4 tower.Let's face it. OS9 sucks. It's time to pound a stake through it's heart, cremate it, load it's bones into a cannon and shoot it out to sea. And Apple should change the term classic mode to antique mode or moldy software mode. :D

I woudn't spend any time on a OS9 version of Metro other than support and fixes. It's time to go where no human has gone before or something like that.

G3 ibook

Postby fastlanephil » Thu Oct 23, 2003 1:18 am

I thought I read somewhere that Apple was still making a G3 ibook for education but I see it's a edu only cd rom option for the 800 mhz model.

That's funny......cause Apple's first claim was combo drives across all models. Edu must be regarded as separate.
Edu would be a great place to have a combo.
Burn your metro creations between classes.

Well I only use it in OS 9 because my Akai Sampler editor software won't run in X. Some of the third Party plug-ins I use also make Metro crash in X.

I can see a future for Metro for OS 9 users. The low system requirements makes it ideal for musicians on a low budget who can't afford the high end new Macs.

We should know Tomorrow night if Metro works with Panther as well.

That's an even better arguement to kill off future updates of Metro for OS9.
People not requiring a lot of features, wouldn't need the latest and greatest versions of anything and so Metro 6.1 is packed with more than enough features to keep a OS9 user very happy.
It's a low end computer, running a lower spec app on a lower spec OS.

More features and developments would require more processing power and a higher end mac. Since very soon no high end mac will run OS9 (if not already), there is no reason for continuing Metro OS9 compatiblity.

It's like when a company says minimum G4 800mhz.......you're basically telling people like me with a 450mhz machine that I can't run it....so I'm stuck to look at other alternatives or upgrade the machine.

That is the case already. The G5 Power Macs can't boot OS 9. Only in classic mode. So I gotta get me a VST based sampler before I upgrade my G4 in the future.

Or audio unit based?

On a different topic.
They have a wrapper for VST plugs to run inside AU environments.
I wish they would create a OS9 to OSX wrapper for VSTs....but I suppose it's not possible.
