Multiple plugin instance crashes?

Postby brook » Fri Jun 27, 2003 9:37 pm

Howdy. I used to use Metro back in the floppy disk days of Deck synchronization and am delighted to be using it now on OSX.

This may be a question of ignorance, but:

I am using the Crystal audio unit. I would really like to use multiple instances - say, put it on aux 1 AND aux 2 with a different patch on each. I know one can do such things with more basic plugins in Deck and Protools. But the minute I drag Crystal into a second Aux track, it crashes the program.

Perhaps synth plugins such as this can't be used in multiple instances? Or could one just dupe the component in the plugins folder of the library with an appendage to the name? I got myself all worked up over a virtual multi-timbral non-sample based synth but maybe its not possible..

So I'm either asking for advice or reporting a bug. What's the deal?

(also wondering if this means I can't have multiple soundfonts in one project)

Thanks,

Brook Hinton

G4/400 Yikes (PCI), 576 RAM, OS10.2.6, full Metro version - happens in both 6.0.5 and 6.0.8 - using built in audio, Roland/edirol UM2 to bring midi in from an SY77 (the only synth in the setup).

I don't have crystal but I've just created 2 aux busses and thrown several virtual instruments and 3 DLS's on each and it hasn't crashed.

My setup is very similar - 450 (gutless sawtooth?), 768mb, 10.2.6, 6.0.8 full.
No midi devices currently plugged in, but AMSetup aware of a midisport.

Time to trash your preferences? Unless someone else has the same trouble. Have found some of the AU's are not 100% compatible yet with every app. It could be crystal doesn't like Metro or somethng like that.
Do you have the problem with DLS to or just assuming?

Welcome back to Metro. :)

I think this may be a problem with Crystal. I will look into it. I have heard of this happening with Crystal before.

You could always convert to audio and then change the crystal patch or use Freealpha with Crystal.

Have you contacted the manufacturer?

Haven't contacted them but will. Thanks for looking into it, Crystal really is what got me back into all this so I'm hoping it eventualy will work.

I looked at Freealpha and I'm confused - it appears to have some similarities to Crystal (though more limited) but I'm confused as to how/why one would use it WITH Crystal to get around the problem - I might be unclear on something about it.

So glad Metro is back in this form and delighted at the response here to what I know is a pretty obscure problem with a somewhat esoteric AU plugin.

I just placed two VST Crystals (v1.4) on tracks 1 and 2... no problem. Then I went and put two instances of VST Crystal on Aux 1 and Aux 2 and again no problem. Two completely different sounds and everything worked perfectly. Scoot... What's up?

I will try the AU version next.

The AU version of Crystal 2.3 crashes immediately upon invocation of the second instance as reported. I have informed the author of this problem. I will report back here if I hear anything.

>I just placed two VST Crystals (v1.4)

That's interesting.

The version I downloaded was 2.3.0, called 'crystal carbon', created June 20 2003, and is about 10.2 megs.

The AU is 2.3.1 and created April 12 2003.

I have no idea what is does.....but it looks impressive. :)
Just wanted to see if it crashed.

Now brook you have the ability to do it, but does ya mac have the power? :)

Crystal seems a very CPU hungry plugin.
Just like a soundfont with too much happening at once.

Wow. I am just amazed at the speed and care with which such a request was handled. Thanks Jeremy, and I'll send a note of thanks to Glen.

Scooterman, my ol' (ha!) G4/400/PCI just gave up the ghost this week (disk death, won't recognize a new drive to format, controller?, who knows and I needed AGP to run software I'm teaching next semester anyway) so we'll now see just how my new tibook does with Crystal. Yup, it's VERY hungry, but I'm excited to see how for I can push it.

Thanks again!
