MIDI tracks quit playing

Postby Ogrossman » Sun Jun 22, 2003 5:00 pm

I'm starting with a new metro document and I import some pre existing midi tracks. Each midi track has the instrument set to port:internal. The midi tracks play fine at this point.

I want to add an audio track to I set the instrument on a new track to TASCAM us-22-2 and record enable that track. Now the VU meter for the track shows the mic is live but the MIDI tracks no longer play. I'm not changing any of the mute or solo buttons.

Please give the machine specifics including:

Metro version
Mac OS Version
Hardware setup including types of Macintosh, Audio and MIDI

It sounds like perhaps you are running OS 9 with the timing preferences set to 'via timer' but I could be mistaken. If you are not running OS 9 then I would recommend using the DLS/Musicdevice plug-in because it sounds and works way better than Internal (Quicktime Musical Instruments).

I was using Metro SE 6.0.5 when I first had the problem but now I've downloaded 6.0.8 and the problem still happens. I'm running OS X 10.2.6 on an LCD iMac (version 2.1) with a 700 MHz G4. I'm using a TASCAM US-224 for both MIDI and audio input. I've set up AMS for a Roland piano hooked up to the US-224 but I don't have the cables connected right now. I don't think I'm using the using the DLS/Musicdevice plug-in (since I don't know what it is).

By the way, thanks for getting back so quickly on this.

The DLS is another name for soundfonts.
It is a plugin that you can drag across to the plugins window from the effects window, but you have to download a soundfont for it to work or be heard.........so if you haven't done that yet its pointless. (on the links page are places to obtain soundfonts).

Now that you're working with the tascam, what ports are available in the session you are working in? You should have your internal outputs available plus about 4 builtin audio ones with clean metro preferences.
Have you added anymore to these original ones? If so, did you check the box to replace the old outputs?

Make sure you don't have a bunch of green dots alongside the midi tracks in the sections window. It can happen automatically without you doing it when you record enable and start recording.

The ports that are available are "Piano-1" (which I set up in AMS), "US-224 Contr-1" through "US-224 Contr-16" (sixteen of them), "TASCAM US-22-1", "TASCAM US-22-2", "TASCAM US-22-3" and "TASCAM US-22-4".

I think the ones like US-224 Contr-1 are for MIDI and the TASCAM US-22-1 are for digital audio. When I do "Edit port" I also get the options "Built-in audio controller" and "internal" (apparently for digital audio and MIDI respectively).

I tried doing what you said with the sound fonts. I downloaded a couple and then dragged the DLS plug-in to the effects window. For the bass track I clicked on the "SoundBank File =" button and selected "fender bass" sound font. Everything looked happy but when I tried to play the MIDI tracks I didn't get any sound. I think I'm missing something real basic here.

To use the tascam for audio you need to set it up in the digital audio setup dialog. 'built-in' is exactly that... the built-in audio.
