Mixdown question

Postby Krushzone » Wed Dec 21, 2005 2:53 pm

Regarding mixdown:

I keep having to delete un-needed "mixdown" tracks. So, just to verify...

Is it possible to "mixdown to an external file" only and not be required to simultaneously mixdown to a "track"?

No but that sounds like a very reasonable feature request.

The reason it is this way is because usually you will want to listen to the resultant mix (by soloing the new track) before doing anything else. This was implemented well before the jukebox so perhaps an option to add the file to the jukebox would be a nice feature as well.

I like the fact that a mixdown appears in the track list (so I can double-check to make sure my mix doesn't clip like crazy), but I also agree it would be nice to have an option to mixdown to external file exclusively (without appearing in the track list).

How 'bout we move this thread to the "Feature Request" forum so we don't have to retype? ;)

I understand. However, due to the nature of the projects I work on, auditioning the resultant mix in Metro, while still in my studio, doesn't offer any more "sonic clues" than the multi-track playback does. I often judge the mix in a variety of non-Metro environments (other rooms, portable MP3 player, the car, etc.) as well.

Thanks for your consideration.

Okay. We have implemented a feature in 6.3.1.1. whereby you can specify, instead of the radio buttons that now exist, either track, track and file or file from a popup menu.

I should note that the way I work is the following. When the song is completed I first save it. Then I mixdown using the 'to track' method of mixing. This creates the track on the hard disk but it is marked as 'deleteable' so that it does not take up space on your hard disk as long as you do not save the Metro document. I then fade out the ending or apply some kind of finalization processing on the finished stereo audio file created by the aforementioned mix. Then I use the 'export track' command to write the final output to the correct place and in the correct audio format that I want.
Finally, I use the 'new' command in Metro and do not save. This releases all plug-ins and deletes all files in the current project that have never been saved or placed on the clipboard. In the above scenario, the 'Mix' file will be deleted but the exported file will remain.
