Shading in note edit grids

Postby Richard_Lanyon » Sun Jun 29, 2003 1:59 pm

I use the mouse to enter MIDI notes directly onto the "piano roll", rather than using a MIDI keyboard. What would make this a bit easier would be if the positions corresponding to the black keys could be shaded, a la Intuem - it's just slightly more obvious which positions correspond to which notes that way, I think. What do you reckon?

I guess Intuem is showin less keys than metro is on its piano roll.

Any thought on how to shade the piano roll in metro?
Currently there doesn't look like there's enough space.

I agree that the default piano roll size is too small for shading to work - it's a bit too small to do accurate editing by mouse too, IMHO - but you can zoom in "vertically" (by Opt-clicking on the Zoom buttom) and get a size which would be suitable for shading.

I am not sure what you mean by shading. Can you point me to a URL or a picture?

This is performer.
Note the shading.
Without increasing the size of the keyboard in metro, I can't see it happening.

Aha , so you mean shading to the right of the graphic editor keyboard. Yes?

Feel up to it Jerm?
It does make the white keys a little out of proportion.

It's funny that when I make notes I don't even consider or think are they on the whites or the blacks........is more of a case of do they sound right?

If Intuem is really good at making midi, maybe Metro should have a connect to Intuem option.

It would be rather funny.......metro used to connect with deck to give deck midi power and now metro would be seen as the audio app and something else would be the midi one.
Boy talk about roll reversal!

Intuem isn't a particularly good MIDI editor - editing note velocities and continuous controllers is particularly painful, though there are some neat features. It's really a bare-bones tool aimed at the educational market, but that means it's cheap! I do think the shading is useful, though, even if you aren't interested in whether the notes are black or white, as it provides an immediate visual reference as to which notes are which, without having to run your eyes over to the edge of the screen to see where they line up with the picture of the keyboard. (Actually, Intuem goes even further than the shot of DP you used, because it shades all the 'C' notes in pink as well as shading black notes in grey). It's useful for me because I often come up with ideas on guitar or something, and then program them into the computer by hand: "err, 3rd fret on the bottom string, so that's a G - now, where's G on the screen?" :)

It's $129.

Metro SE is < $100.

Did I miss something? :)

Yeah, I got it free (well, an NFR version) because I did some bug-hunting in their demo version.

Shading

Postby Jerm » Fri Aug 01, 2003 7:53 pm

Shading is implemented as a note-grid option from the set-up menu in Metro and Metro SE Versions 6.0.8.2 (currently unreleased).
