What Are Effects Stereo Outs?

Postby sseaton » Tue Oct 21, 2003 11:32 pm

I use the DLSMusicDevice on an Aux Bus. When I go into the Effects Window, I see that above Stereo Outs it has the name of my Aux Bus selected, but next to that it says Off. When I click on Off it also lists my Aux Bus. Similarly, when I use SampleTank Free I get the one Stereo Out with my Aux Bus and 3 "offs". I can click on each of the "offs" to select my Aux Bus. I don't understand why this is. If anyone can explain Stereo Outs to me, that would be great! Thanks in advance!

I think it is pretty simple. If we take sampletank for example. Sampletank has 8 outputs or 4 stereo outs. This is useful (not as, for SE users) if you want to add more effects to say a sampletank snare drum patch. You simply route the snare drum in sampletank to outputs 3+4. Then in Metro you route the second stereo out to say aux 2. Then on aux 2 you put a reverb. Now you have the main sampletank outs going straight to the output but the second stereo output (3+4) is routed through the reverb on aux 2.

Since sampletank uses reverbs for each patch this also makes it possible to group all of sampletanks channels that want reverb and send them through a single reverb. This can have a dramatic performance increase since the reverb is processing audio only once for the entire group. Of course to get this performance boost you must turn off all of sampletanks internal reverbs individually.

If this is clear as mud, then it probably tastes like coffee and I need some.

Is that like having a guitar with a whole lot of foot pedals on the floor before going into the amp?

Well then.....it's a major step forward then even if we haven't grasped it yet.

I think other apps have it in some form.
I remember protools free had things going all over the place....most confusing.

I'm slack.......I haven't even grabbed the update yet!

OK. I've finally figured it out.

If you have your soundfont playing and you look in the mixer, you'll see the DLS Music Meters alongside the faders moving, along with whatever Built in Audio Track is outputing the signal as well.

Let's say for example if you placed your reverb on aux 2 and built-in audio 3 was registering audio signal, you would turn up the fader on aux 2's built in audio 3 and wham you have reverb on your soundfont!
Cool. Nice implementation.

Nice bright new silvery icon too for Metro's app. :D
