Sustain pedal & pitch bend problems with internal sounds

Postby sseaton » Sat Mar 01, 2003 2:01 am

Hi all... it's me again. Thanks for everyone's help. This is a really great forum. And an especially big thanks to Jerm for all his help!

I'm running an iBook 700 MHz G3, a MidiSport 1X1, and Metro SE. I have been impressed with the low latency while using the internal sounds (SoundFonts & Quicktime). My problem now is that I get a delay in the release of the sustain pedal and a delay in using the pitch bend. I also get a delay when releasing a note on my controlloer keyboard. I'm using a Kawai MP9000 as a controller keyboard.

Is my problem due to the SoundFonts or Quicktime internal sounds? If so, will this disappear with VSTi's? Or is my problem with my processor speed? I would be reluctant to say so, because the latency when I strike notes is very low.

I tested out my system using the Kawai MP9000 as the sound module (no internal sounds), and all the problems went away. So I believe that there is nothing wrong with my MIDI interface. Could there be a problem with the sustain pedal and pitch bend data being sent to the internal sounds?

Thanks in advance for all your help!

There is a problem in Metro using internal sounds and the sustain pedal in versions < 6.05i3. This would result in notes being stuck on if stop is pressed while the sustain pedal is on in a sequence.

This is a different problem than what you mentioned though. The delay you are experiencing is most likely related to QuickTime, which has problems with pitch bend and aftertouch in some OS's. The soundfont player/VSTi's should not have this problem. Although there is always a delay of at least one audio packet size so you may want to set that small for recording (digital audo setup/options).

Jerm... thanks for the tip. Unfortunately, I set the audio buffer packet size lower and still got the problem with both Quicktime sounds and soundfonts. I haven't tried using a VSTi yet, though. Can anyone else recreate my problem with Quicktime sounds and soundfonts on their machines?

No More Problems With Suatain Pedal, Pitch Bend, And Release

Postby sseaton » Thu Mar 06, 2003 10:42 am

I am now using soundfonts correctly, and that completely eliminated my problems with the sustain pedal, pitch bend, and release of notes. The fix was to simply drag the DLS/Sounfont plug-in to the Effects window. Then I was able to use my soundfont bank with no problem at all. I was surprised in the performance improvement. I did reduce the audio buffer packet size one notch, but I was still getting good results without doing this. Thanks a lot Jerm for all your help!!!!
