Metro MIDI tracks mixed to MP3 of AIFF...

Postby sseaton » Fri Feb 28, 2003 3:39 pm

Can someone please tell me how to export my MIDI tracks to MP3 or AIFF? I'm using only soundfonts or the Quicktime synthesizer, and I will not be using external sound modules/keyboards. I'm using Metro 6 SE. Do I need to record the MIDI tracks to an audio track and then export the audio track? If so, how? Thanks in advance!

To create audio from a synthesizer plug-in simply select the time range and select MIX audio tracks from the file menu.

Important things to keep in mind:

1. Make sure to include the release stage of any notes. This means you may have to select past the end of the last note.
2. All selected audio tracks are added to the mix.
3. All internally assigned synthesizer tracks are also add to the mix whether or not they are selected. Make sure to mute tracks that you do not want in the mix.
4. The output is always a stereo AIFF.

To convert to MP3 use iTunes or the equivalent.

referring to a previous question on how to mix midi to audio so I may use plug ins, i still did not understand the answer.

Please offer a step-by-step approach on taking a gm midi track and converting it to a aiff.

Thanks....hh

HH,

Do you know how to use soundfonts and the DLS/MusicDevice yet? That would be the first step. Search this forum for 'soundfont' for more info.

If you setup midi tracks to be heard through soundfonts (use dlsmusicdevice plugin, change the ports from internal to dls and program change to teh dls instrument), and have one of them displayed, you can then choose mix audio tracks which will do a non real time mix (usually 4 times quicker than real time on my slow 450mhz) of the selected tracks together.

Then you can add effects.

:(

Hi scooterman:

I have been exploring with dls and am starting to understand it a little. I followed you advise and chose dls devise under effects and put it in the plug in window, and modified the outputs. But I think I'm still not quite there. I have 15 channels of default Quicktime synth midi and want how do I assign each of those 15 channels to this plug in midi for audio mix?

After I ultimately achieve this, it would only allow me a single mix, combining all of the 15 channels. Is it because I only have the Metro 6 that I can only use one plug in, that being the dls instrument devise.

Until locate enough good sounding soundfonts, my goal is to mix all 15 midi tracks down to audio and then add effects to enhance each of the sounds.

Any advise is always appreciated.

Thanks.....d

HH - Do you actually have a soundfont to use?

The dlsmusicdevice that you grab from the plugins window and place in the effects window is like a shell that the soundfont goes into.
You have to then install one into this shell by clicking on the area that says "none" and placing a soundfont there. I use one called "real font 2.1". There is a links page on sagantech that can take you to it. It's a soundfont bank and about 105MB (so it's a few hours of downloading at 56k).

I looked back on your messages. You used to have 12 midi tracks.....now its gone up to 15! Wow! :)
I see you're using SE.

I grabbed the demo of SE.
You can place one soundfont (let's say the real font 2.1) and have it wired as a piano, bass, guitar and drum kit all at once in SE.

- bring your midi file into SE
- setup an aux to place the dlsmusidevice onto, from the modify outputs and busses menu option
- open the effects window and display the aux you just created (aux 1)
- open the plugins window and drag dlsmusicdevice across to the aux.
- choose your soundfont (this is where I grab my real font 2.1).
- now go up to the modify outputs and busses menu option again and add 16 outputs on the dlsmusicdevice popup that is now available.
- if you go to the sections window and see your tracks listed as internal, you can now click on them and change them to Apple DLS Mu1,2,3,.....
- change a piano track you have to Apple DLS Mu1
- choose dls for bank and piano for pgm.

Play. You are now hearing the soundfont instead of the quicktime instrument.

You can carry on down the list and play as many as your CPU will allow (or Metro SE will allow  ).
Remember to set any drum track to Apple DLS Mu10 and then select dls1 for the bank. The available kits will then appear in the pgm area.

Under the demo I can see mix audio tracks, but I can't get it to un-grey. It may be a demo limitation.......I hope.
Under Metro I just 'solo' all the soundfonted midi tracks I want to record to audio, and have an audio track available. I don't even think I have to record enable it. Choose mix audio tracks and it mixes them altogether as one.

Have another go HH......you're very close to getting it.

oops my 25 minutes just ran out. :D

Yes it is a demo limitation.

SE allows you to mix all synth tracks together.

To transform only some of your synth tracks to audio, solo them.

Hi Scooterman:

thanks again for your tireless efforts to get me "on track". The fonts I had tried were individual ones, a really nice orchestral synth and another was a pad synth. However, I think from your advise i will need to download real fonts which correspond to the entire default midi sounds collection? I will go and try to download the file. I have a d s l connection so it will take less than 5 minutes.

I'm a working bassist and must leave for Europe on Wed july 10, but will be back in action the following Tuesday.

As soon as I crack this dls devise / font stuff, I'll be ready to invest in the Big Mac Metro.

Until next time....
thanks again...hh

Yeah.....'real fonts 2.1' is the name of a set.
I guess it a GM set without the need to buy a synth. :)

I do like some of the drum kits. Some are very CPU sucking though and really bog my single CPU down.

Big Mac Metro.......hehe maybe a new title for it.

By the way, I decided to stay up all the night and tried using your instructions for installing the dls soundfonts. One problemo though, I was unable to open Real Font 2 because both Sfark and Sfpack are pc based. Everytime i tried to extract or decompress the soundfont, it never came thru and errors occurred. here's some info from macosxhints..

(I did try your formula for the single sound fonts i had and there was no problem uploading. But they were not multitimbred sounds. )

http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php? ... mode=print

Now i gotta pack and get outta here....

thansk and will check in when i return....hh

You need to make sure you go to the uncompressed portion of the soundsite!
