midi drum editor

Does Metro have a midi drum editor? what I really want to see is in the midi drum track editor window is the individual names of the patches shown on the piano keys. hi-hats, toms, snare etc...

Protools does not have this, I think motu does but not sure plus it's too expensive.

Yes. Metro has a drum editor. When in drum mode, Metro replaces the piano roll with drum names. When you mouse over the drum's vertical position Metro will show you the pitch (piano key) of the drum sound. You can also mute and solo individual drum sounds and transpose between drum sets. Furthermore, you can create and edit drum sets on the fly or with the drum set editor.

In the graphic editor look above the track where it says "Notes". Change this to "Drums".

Add a few drums on the left, then use the pencil tool on the piano roll on the left and you will input drums equal to the current note length.

I setup 1 midi channel and 1 audio track to be able to monitor the midi audio and I created a AUX out of the audio track. The problem I see is that when i record, the midi audio gets recorded as well which is what i don't want. I just to be able to hear the midi through an aux track until such time I want to do the complete mix down. Any way to do this?

Have you outputted the midi channel to an audio output?
What happens if you just have the midi channel as internal?

Do you just record and listen using the mac's built in - IN and OUT?

(I don't currently have my mac setup for recording from an ext. source so I can't test that out, but I did record audio to another track and the midi didn't get included. Maybe everything hits the fan when you go ext.).

?? not sure what you mean here? I route my midi audio to a stereo input pair on my digi 001.

?? internal - not sure what you mean here either.

I can monitor the midi audio with a aux track with digi 001.

Just not sure what's the best way to setup similar thing in Metro?

It's very simple, I need to be able to monitor the audio somehow without always recording the audio (not midi data). Later during final mix I will then want to record the midi audio in the main mix. This is how Protools LE works with the Digi001.

I think what is confusing me and why I have not answered this post is because the terminology is difficult to understand.

What are the devices in use here? I know you have a Macintosh computer. What is the MIDI device, Audio device and how how are they connected? What are trying to do exactly? I know you want to monitor audio while recording MIDI. This should not be a problem but the use of the term 'AUX' is throwing me. There is no need to have a Aux buss in Metro to do this so perhaps you mean an aux on the audio hardware.

OK. I have a Korg X5D and the audio L/R channel audio is connected to channels 7/8 of digi001. If I setup a midi track I seem to be able to record the midi notes ok but i can't hear anything. Yes, I would hear it if I route the audio L/R to my output mixer, that's no problem but that's not how I have set it up with Protools. In protools I have a AUX track for the sole purpose of monitoring the audio. this way the audio never gets recorded as audio data. Only the midi is edited/recorded. Once I am ready to record the audio in the main mix that is no problem afterwards.

I'm trying to do the same thing with Metro since that's what I'm familiar with.

Another problem is I tried to get the "general midi" patch names to show up following the instructions on page 3-20 of the manual "Customizing Program Names". But there is no file anywhere named "General Midi". I don't seem to have a "Progam Names Folder" within the Metro application?

Ok. How do you listen? Is there a headphone out from the digi001? You do not get an audio signal out of the x5 or you do?

I would route the audio differently. Do you have any aux's on your mixer?

Have you tried using MIDI thru? Software Audio through? Make sure to turn down your mixer before turning on audio thru as feedback is very possible.

The folder containing the GM names is called 'Program Names & Drum Kits'. Inside that folder is a file named 'General MIDI'.

BlueRondo,

Did you ever decide what to do about your audio monitoring dilemma with using the Digi 001? I've had the same questions in regard to using a Digi 002, so I understand what you're talking about.

Thanks for a reply.
