drum samples and loops help in METRO

Postby malan » Tue Jan 06, 2004 5:26 pm

Hello,

I've been playing around with MIDI recently using Midi Keys and Metro and the quicktime synthesizer. I received some nice drum samples (loops and individual hits) for xmas that are in .wav format. What I'd like to be able to do is use the Rhythm explorer and other drum features of metro using these samples.

I don't exactly know how to accomplish this. With the quicktime synth I'm able to access those drum sounds and record to a midi track. I eventually want the file in aiff format which, thanks to this forum I see a path forward on that front. However, I need to some how get the .wav files of individual hits loaded as a sample to be accessed like I access the quicktime synthesizer through MIDI keys.

When I do this in OS 9 I use CapstoMIDI. I've been doing more of that lately because I'm more used to OMS 2.3.8. I use the IACdriver to use CapstoMIDI.

As for the loops I don't really know how to use those either with Metro.

Thanks,
Mike

Mike,

Sounds like you need a sampler to play back the drum hits.

as for the loops, you should be able to simply import the audio files and place them where you want. You might want take a look at phatmatik. I think there is a free version.

I thought Metro was supposed to have a sampler (or just a simple sampler) incorporated with it?

what I really want to do is make my own drum loops or just play along with audio I've already created (guitar, bass and voice)...so lets say I have this sampler. I have my Midi keys to trigger the sound. So...I need to map my midi keys to a set of drum sounds in the sampler then I need to link that to metro to record? Does that sound basically right? How would I use the Rhythm explorer then? I really need a general overview of how all the different pieces of audio software fit together. Can you recommend literature that would help me understand the big picture? I've been recording on my mac since '98 but just recording from my guitar amp...pretty simple stuff. Then I mix at the end.

I've looked into Battery...do you know people who are using battery with Metro? Any success?

Metro can play back samples, but the first need to be in Sound Font 2 format (.sf2), and I think you need to be running OSX. To use a sount font file simaly drag the DLSMusicDevice (located in the Plug-Ins window) into the effects window (be sure to highlight the tack you want to use). Then click on the button next to SoundBank File = and choose the .sf2 file you wish to use.
I have used Battery, but for the price I opted for VSamp. Sometimes you do have do map out your own drums, if they do not match any of the kit mappings already available in Metro. It's not as hard as it sounds, and once it is done, your off and rocking.
You do know about the drum editor grid (just hit d) Once you have a midi drum track made you then choose Rythen Explorer and set the Peramaters of how much you want the explorer to do. It's kind of a cool program to fiddle with, I have came up with some cool drum tracks using it, but for the most part I just stick with the originals.

kaboombahchuck,

I've already played with some of the kit mappings so I don't think this will be a problem. What about loops? the previous poster suggested phatmatik...I see that is $149. Do you know of anything less expensive? What about Midi loops in Metro? Isn't Metro supposed to be able to do some loop tricks?

If I purchased phatmatik would I need VSamp for the individual hits?

Malan,

I think phatmatik is FREE. Phatmatik Pro is $149.
