MIDIfile 0,1,2 in; 0,1 out? 1 covers most needs, but it would be nice to have full in/out options....maybe... :?:

Why? Type 2, at least my understanding, is just multiple type 0's in a single file.

Yes, of course you're right, though as I remember there's a header, so you can't just 'cat' a bunch of type 0's together. Why support? Only for packaging a bunch of 'em for transport...and since AFAIK it doesn't include the (preferable) type 1's, there's little actual use for it.
