inconsistent behavior of program change settings?

This may be user error, but has me very confused. SE 6.1.0.4 (and 6.1.0.3):

When I change programs on a track from the little program field next to ImpSel on the Tracks window, it _sometimes_ sends my external synth the program change. (It seems to work most or all the time if I have internal [Quicktime] sounds selected)..)

When I click the instrument name in the Mixer window and change the program through the dialog box, it seem always to work (and if I click the snapshot icon, the event edit window shows the change).

If I change the program through the Tracks window and then open the dialog box, the program is shown as changed there...so it appears that the functionality is supposed to be the same. But something's not quite in agreement... :(

Okay, I'll try again.....
And again, this may be user error....there's a slight chance that I'd selected another track or failed to select the track in question, and MIDI thru played through that other track, and confused me.
(I'll check that tonight, and apologize profusely if I can't recreate the problem!!!)

Anyway.....

When I change the program number of a track from the Tracks window (the little slider where you drag up & down to cycle through numbers),
sometimes the change is reflected immediately at my external synth (so that if I play at the keyboard, the sound reflects the new program setting). Sometimes not. I have no idea when it's going to work, and when not. That's the problem.

Usually (perhaps always), if I click on the instrument name in the Mixer, I can see that the change is reflected in the "Define Outputs" box. So something has happened...but the sound hasn't changed.

there used to be a difference between changing in the tracks window and changing program names in the graphic editor.

The graphic editor is the permanent solution.

There is also a menu option called "chasing".

If you have a program change at Bar 2 and you're at Bar 8 and mucked around with the faders etc...........it looks back for the last fader positions and program changes. It will revert back to these unless you turn chasing off!

I believe you have it, Scoot! Thanks. I'd snapped a change into the beginning of those tracks, and had program change chasing on. So Metro was probably chasing that, overriding what I'd just chosen. (A bit confusing, but I don't see an obviously better approach.)
