I am an experienced musician and comfortable with notation and sequencing programs but I am completely clueless when it comes to output. I have been using Allegro, which plays back the music I create using its own instrumentation, which sounds decent enough. But when I work in Metro, the playback uses the Apple DLSMusicDevice, which sounds horrible. Knowing nothing about softsynths, soundfonts, etc, where do I go to find out about these things? My goal is to find a good range of computer-resident decent-sounding orchestral and rhythm patches or samples that I can use with Metro to orchestrate projects. I have no keyboard synth of my own.

thanks for any help

I wouldn't say the Apple DLSMusicDevice sounds terrible but the default Quicktime soundfont is certainly not great. If you are really using the DLSMusicDevice you can change the sound font. There are plenty of very good sound fonts.

On the other hand you might want to look at orchestral plug-ins or rompler/sampler type solutions.

I can recommend Sampletank 2, Kontakt 3 or Garritan Personal Orchestra among many others.

Take a look at our links page for many options including links to free soundfonts and professional plug-ins.

Check out Bandstand. NI recently dropped the price by half making it a very affordable 2.5 GB sound library.
