Yamaha PSR-172 or Korg Triton LE with Metro

Hey, it's me again, probably the most remedial MIDI wanna-be user in the world of MIDI. I have previously been trying to get my Korg Triton LE working with Metro, but I had a time constraint so I just picked up a Yamaha PSR-172, hooked it up to Metro and it used to work perfectly, with a touch of a button, but now, i can't get it to communicate with my computer. Anyway, it's been a while since I've worked on this stuff so I've forgotten a lot of what needs to be done. I looked at my previous posts and tried to setup with replies, but i still can't get my files to play on the Yamaha. Anyway, I've decided to start anew. I want the fastest and easiest way to play my midi files on Metro. I use the Triton for live performance, and I could also bring out the Yamaha if it will make things easier. Any advice? I wish I could have one of you come out here and take me through this stuff step by step. But I guess it's not possible. I'd appreciate any help though.

Well I suppose the best thing to do is connect the midi interface to the mac and the in/out cables from the interface to the synth.

Launch the utility app audio/midi setup and run cables from a graphic of the synth to the interface.

Launch metro and go to midi setup from the setup window and select record from - name of synth.


That should do it.........once you modify outputs to add some for the synth. Make the tracks you want to output to the synth as such.

If you are using OS 10.3 or greater, the Audio/MIDI setup utility has a feature where you can test your studio to make sure you are connected properly.

Also you may want to update to the latest version of Metro to make sure you have full OS compatibility.

Hello again, Scoot and Jerm. It's almost embarrassing that I'm asking the same things again. I apologize. When configuring the Yamaha, I just looked at the pics you replied with on my other post. I just put in PSR for the device. I have the Yamaha hooked up to the Midisport and have that plugged into the mac. It seems that all the configurations are correct (but I don't have os10.3, nor have I downloaded the latest version of Metro). I must be missing something about selecting the outputs. PSR isn't coming up as one of the options. The workstation (from a previous configuration) is coming up, and so I'm a bit confused. Anyway, thanks for your help.

By the way, do you think it's a good idea to download the latest version of Metro if I'm not using OS10.3 and I haven't even figured out the workings of the version I have?

Where is the PSR not coming up?

If you allocate outputs to it from the 'modify outputs and busses' munu option, you should be able to select it rather than say builtin audio1 or internal 1 etc.

If you want the PSR bank and program names like grand piano and plunked bass to appear when they should you need to install the PSR program names in the apporiate menu option 'program names' by loading a .ins instrument definition file.

Now the thing works. The PSR is playing the files and hopefully will continue to do so. Where do I find the .ins instrument definition file?

Also, if a file comes up on one track, how do I go about splitting the tracks? I tried to export it again into type 1 but it doesn't seem to work. There must be another way.

On Sagan's main link page are 2 links to cakewalk instrument definition files. I don't see a 172, but if it is a synth with 200 basic sounds, one of the early PSR models should work just as well. If the 172 has XG sounds (closer to 700 sounds), you could download a XG .ins file.

If the synth is doing what you want, and you want it to continue goto the metro prefs and click save to retain te settings.

If you use metro with the synth disconnected, later when you reconnect and restart metro it should find the synth ok.

To expand a single track MIDI file, use expand by channel.
