Splitting Midi Notes to separate midi tracks for mixing

Postby drum1 » Mon Mar 29, 2004 9:16 am

I have a Roland Spd-20 percussion pad and have been using Pro tools. While midi works fine in Pro Tools- (le) as a novice I am now wanting to take the plunge and upgrade to a new midi program.
Pro tools only records on one midi channel at a time. Not a problem since my spd-20 does as well. Here is the dilema..
#1. I would like to split up the midi notes (each drum) to a separate channel so that I can mix each drum after converting it to an audio file.

I have a digi 001 and it only has one midi in/out/thru.

I eventually would like to record more that one midi device at a time and pro tools only does this on one midi track. I like to record a midi and audio track at the same time.

#2. Does Metro SE let me do this? Do I need a separate midi interface other than the Digi 001?

#3. Will Metro and protools play together?

Sorry, these may be basic questions but It's hard to find the answers clearly on the forums.

You need to create the audio files separately if you want to mix the audio files. Really all you need to do is to use Metro's (SE/LX) expand by drum command and then mix as MIDI before creating an Audio file.

Metro SE will allow you to record MIDI and audio at the same time. You can record from multiple devices and use the expand by channel to create multiple tracks. I am unfamiliar with the Digi 001 so I would recommend trying it with the demo. I know that the Digi audio hardware does not work well with OS X and other, non-digi applications.

Does protools play with any other products?
I think they sorta make their own standard.....as they seem to have a bit of a 'we have a big user base' attitude.

I got scared when every other app went wysiwyg and moved to charcol and they were still in chicago.

If you need a run through 'expand by drum' just ask.

If you configure a drum kit in Metro that matches your drum machine, you won't even have to do that. When you go to a drums view on a track, there is a separate Mute and Solo button for each drum. If you want separate audio for each drum, you can just Solo them and record them to audio, one drum at a time.

But that seems like a lot of trouble, unless you want to apply separate effects to the individual drums. Assuming that your drum machine responds properly to velocity, you can balance them by selecting the drum hits you want to change, and then using the Velocity edit window to add, subtract, or scale the velocity.

Or if the drums are on a soft-synth you can expand by drum and then use "Render" from the mix audio tracks dialog.

I agree with cornutt except I don't see how you could pan the drums unless they were audio. (that idrum pluggin I listed elsewhere has nice volume and pan control for each drum).

Possibly a lot of mucking about but quicker than recording each midi drum to audio individually........and there is probably another way to do this but:

Using internal (qt) you can expand the drums, the drums go onto individual tracks but become attached to audio ports and you don't see your data. Change each track to a different internal port (or midi friendly port) and that way each track will appear in the mixer window on a different fader and you can pan the drums the way you want and then record the whole lot as one audio file panned nicely.

(if playback from int1, int2 etc., reveals a bass or a piano sound. Just reconfig each track to the qt drum kit and everything is sweet).

I can't download the Metro 6 demo for some reason. I have stuffit expander.

This is sitting in my downloads folder. -metro61demo.sitx

It Will not open up.

The midi editing tutorial works- (PDF). but the 5BarEdit_start / finish can't find the application.

I'm running OS 9.2 currently. I have the OS 10.2 disc but haven't used it yet.

Metro/Le work on OS 9.2 Correct?

Metro and Metro SE work in OS9.
Metro LX is OSX only.

You may need a more up to date stuffit expander?

I wonder if it's possible to make metro self expanding?

I just expanded metro 6.08 demo with stuffit expander 5.5 in classic so it should open in OS9 the same way.
