High quality "complete" GM Soundfont bank

Postby Drumkit » Fri Dec 19, 2003 12:40 pm

Does anyone have a high quality, complete GM Soundfont bank I could have? I've looked on Hammersound and all the downloads failed. The default Quicktime sounds are unusable for live performance. :(

Thanks,

I haven't tried these from Hammersound but the downloads seemed to work for me.

The downloads do all fail with the silly popup it creates, but when it does that, you usually see a selection of mirror sites down the left side, such as USA II, USA III, USA VII, UK, Austria etc.

If you click on one of these see if the download will start in the download window of safari. This is the way I got them to download.
If it doesn't work, try another.
About 10%-20% seem to have gone or don't exist anymore, but the others download fine.
If the soundfont requires something from a site called something like melodymachine.com, it will NOT work on the Mac, as it needs to be expanded on a PC.

Jerm,
Ive downloaded a bank and it is way cool......better than the Quicktime sounds. The "Banks" folder within Library\Audio is where I placed the downloaded Soundfont bank, then made "it" the default in Quicktime. However, if I were to purchase comercial VST Instruments, is this where I am to place them as well? I apologize...but I am really new to this...

P.S. - Any suggestions on what to purchase that would work well with Metro SE. I'm looking for something better than the sounds on my Korg X3 workstation.

Thnks,

There are 2 simple places to stick VST's.

Under OS9 - In the metro folder, open the plugins folder and drop them into the VST folder.

Under OSX - In the metro folder there is an alias folder called "OS X VST plug-ins". If you drop them in here it is placing them in - yourharddiskname/library/audio/plug-ins/VST which is the right location.

Alongside this VST folder is also a folder called "Components". This is where the audio units should be placed.

Soundfonts can be placed pretty much anywhere.
I have mine in the metro folder and a folder of shortcuts on the dock to get to these different places quickly.

Thanks Scoot...both you and Jerm have been of great help...this is awesome. Are you using any VST Instruments/soft synths? Is it worth investing? If so, any suggestions on who makes a great all purpose product...or should I stick w/ the soundfonts?

The soundfonts are good for general sounds - there are not a lot of weird/strange sounds in the collections. You can't complain if the cost is free.

If you want something a little different take a look at Absynth (http://www.nativeinstruments.de/index.php?home_us) and Tera and Cube which have good demos at (http://www.virsyn.com/en/E_Home/e_home.html)
All these products are in the $200-$300 price range.
