Intermittent pops

Postby Slobticket » Thu Sep 23, 2004 7:11 pm

I keep getting intermittent audio splats, similar to clipping noises (but I'm not clipping, I've checked) every five seconds or so when I record in OS X in Metro. This doesn't happen in OS 9 Metro or in any other audio program I've tried. The noises are still there on playback of these files in other programs, so the problem definitely is in recording.

I've fiddled somewhat with adjusting buffer sizes and packet sizes. No help.

I'm guessing that perhaps I'm perhaps running into memory problems because of using OS X (it's 10.2.8)? I only have 384MB on my iMac G3 400mhz DV.

Or is it something else, before I finally break down and buy another 256MB of memory now that I'm also edging nearer to computer-upgrade time?

It could definitely be memory. Mac OS X likes a LOT of memory (not too mention fast processors).

There are several other factors though. Make sure you are not doing file sharing and that you do not have a CD in the drive, that the finder does not have a lot of windows open and that none of the finder windows are calculating folder sizes, that you are not running background tasks, that you are recording to a speedy drive with a lot of hard drive space (probably most important since OS X fails miserably when hard drive free space is low) and that your buffer sizes are set to their default. I am sure there are probably 10 or more things to check.

Are you running any soft-synths? Are you using built-in audio?

No soft synths, but I am using built-in audio -- how would that affect it?

And how do you keep Finder windows from calculating folder sizes?

I would think your computer should be able to record without any pops.

I asked if you were using built-in because if you were NOT, then the problem might be related to a 3rd party driver.

The finder will display folder sizes if 'calcuate all sizes' is checked in the view options window.

Jerm, and anyone who ever experiences the same problem,

I upped the iMac's memory to a full gig. Problem instantly solved.

And look how quickly those waveforms draw now! I think 384MB with OSX just may be nowhere near enough ....

whereas you could probably do everything in OS9 with 128MB.......and I survived for years easily with 256.......till I went to OSX and noticed everything took forever.......still does.......at 768. lol

I remember the change from Metro 4.5 to 5.0 on my 100Mhz 603e powerbook. No other change but the performance of 5.0 was outstanding for screen redraws and updating..........40MB machine OS8.6?.
