Slow Hard Drive Error

Phil,

Since you mentioned that you were using an iMic and this device uses the built-in apple usb driver, the slow hard drive error is probably related to a bug in Metro prior to 6.0.7.2. If you haven't updated to 6.0.7.2, I would strongly recommend you do so.

Also, I understand that some usb hubs don't work well with usb audio. I have one from Griffin Technology that was designed to work with audio. I have seen messages on other boards that support this problem. Though it's usually an inability to find the device.

That is not true, "USB Audio" is no different than other USB data. bandwidth is bandwidth is bandwidth. The only thing their hub might have is a proper power supply, and that helps ... with their iMic wich seems to have lots of problem in it's own right with it's power regulation.

So all in all their HUB is made to compensate for their iMic defects.

I think it would be safer to say that USB audio is somehow different to other forms of audio.

In some cases this difference seems to create problems.

Well USB audio is a bad idea to start with; doing synchronous data transferts on an asynchronous protocol is silly. It works if *nothing else* is canibalizing the bandwidth, and even then you'll introduce lots of latency because of the buffering involved.

With a synchronous link you don't need buffering, that makes a huge difference.

The thing is, these days the USB audio is a solution because at least you get ADC/DAC outside of the chassis of the machine; in modern computer even with "good" shielding you have your sensitive sensors *inside* a casing that is literaly a storm of emissions.

So, right now it's a "necessary evil"

I think the slow HD error has been replaced with a message that says i'm using too many effects and my iBook can't handle it, even with just one or two. Adding some delay or reverb seems to get me in trouble. Hence, my purchase of a external effects device. But I will upgrade Metro. Springs a very busy time for me so not much time to play. Landscaping biz.

Traded the Behringer back in for a Alesis Nanoverb. This will give me basic reverb which I am told puts a lot of demand on any processor. I'll try using this with the audio unit effects and avoid programing an effects module.

Well, not really... Firewire audio is getting cheaper every day.
