Input gain with Core Audio

Postby Durumbrain » Wed Dec 21, 2005 10:03 am

I can't find a way to set a gain on my audio input. The Device Options in the Digital Audio Setup displays no such thing. I really need it. I know I could do it with the Sound Manager settings on OS 9.

There is no apparent way to set the gain to more than 100% in any sound preferences.

(By the way, I have Metro 6.3.2.4 and Mac OS 10.3.2)

To clarify my problem a little, I have not yet bought a preamp for my new mic, but I need to record some songs that I'm going to give away this christmas (that is, in a few days!). I will try to solve this problem by setting the gain digitally and fix the sound with some sort of noise reduction or gate. Everything is in control, except for the actual gain. I can not simply normalize the audio after it has been recorded, since I want to monitor the sound while recording.

If you have the full version you could stick a plug-in in the track path and then use software audio through. Otherwise you will need to either contact the audio device manufacturer and ask them if they support input gain or get a mixer and use that for monitoring.

Little mixers can be had very inexpensively these days.

The simplest solution I could find was to put Apples GraphicEQ on the track. It seems like noone has ever thought of making a simple "gain"-plugin, though many plugins allow you to increase gain after their effect has been applied.

I'll get some sort of audio interface after christmas to solve this problem permanently.

Blockfish - channel compressor - has a good gain on it using the output knob.....and at the same time you could use compression too.
