Diable DLS for better processing speed?

Postby rickchaff » Tue Dec 09, 2003 10:39 pm

Hi Jeremy

Did you explain how to disable DLS to increse processing speed? ...

Create DSL instrument through an Aux channel and then turn it off?

Does this help increase processing speed because it disables the reverb?

thanks!

I would have thought not installing it to start with is the way to get maximum CPU? no?

Does that mean the reverb is on all the time when not in use?
I thought the quicktime reverb was on all the time unless you drew a line at zero in the graphic editor for the reverb controller.

DLS without reverb is pretty nasty eh? Unless you're using another plugin to provide reverb.

I am not exactly sure what you are looking to do. If you want to use DLS but you do not seem to have enough processing power you could try the following:

• Turn the reverb off. This will improve processor performance.
• Turn the quality down in the DLS Edit window.
• Convert to audio tracks and remove the DLS plug-in.

The following is a related to using Mix audio tracks and DLS plug-in:
There is a problem with the DLS synth when rendering by mix tracks in all current versions of Metro and current OS's. Apple will have a fix in the next QuickTime update. For now, the workaround is to use the new feature of 6.1.0.5 that allows direct recording of the outputs instead of Mix Tracks.

squeezing in 2 more tracks

Postby rickchaff » Fri Dec 12, 2003 10:32 am

I'm not using DLS I'm recording audio. Will removing the plugin give me more processing headroom for audio? I recall a post about disabling the reverb somewhere to give more processing power.

I have about 14 tracks running and I'm using a G3 350 mhz; OSX so I think I'm lucky to have that much working fine. It's just starting to hiccup. I'm probably asking for a lot but I'd like to squeeze 2 more tracks before combining. I have a great firewire drive (72000) and a 20 Gig additional drive in the machine. Could I put a few tracks on the firewire drive and keep the rest on the internal drive to get those 2 more tracks?

Thanks.

One important thing is to make sure that absolutely no ports are assigned to internal. This is the quicktime synth and at least in earlier versions of OS X, it would suck up processing even if nothing was happening.

If use a program like "top" from the terminal you can see how much processor and what resources Metro is using in various situations.

You could try moving to different drives but I do not know if this will help. More memory might help depending on how much you have.

Be aware of other applications too. Especially anything that may be using disk resources, like the finder's show all sizes option.

Hi Jeremy

Thanks, that answers my question.

I'm going for track 15 now and so far so good. I did increase my record and playback buffer sizes to 100. Perhaps this gave me a little more. I don't have any internal instruments set up and that's what I needed to know.

Is the 100K buffer setting logical for playback and record? and how about a 50mb preallocate setting? whoops two more questions....sorry.

Yes. OS X is happy with big buffers.

Preallocating 50 MB does not matter. What Metro does by default if you specify 0 for pre-allocate is that it pre-allocates the song size up to 200 measures. So this would only have an affect on recording the first track.
