Waveform editing in Metro...

Postby MediaUnion » Thu Dec 04, 2003 2:35 am

Hello,

I know that you can drill down into a waveform in Metro and edit it by clicking on the crosses and dragging to a new location. However this is really tedious and I can't seem to remove the pop or glitches that I sometimes get.

I've searched high and low for an OS X VST or AU Click/Pop plugin. Does anyone know of a plugin or method for editing waveforms in Metro?

Bias' soundsoap only removes rumble and noise. They recommend purchasing Peak to removing pops but I want to catch them before
the mixdown.

Some of the steinberg plugs when really good.
I don't know if they are in OSX but they were available in OS9 and could be used with Metro.

A declicker? Or a denoiser......this was ages ago when I saw it.

I took a crackling AIFF recording of an old record to a friend and this VST plugin removed about 90% of it. It was doing it in realtime while it was playing and it showed the parts of the waveform is was removing or cleaning. Worked more effectively than soundsoap but maybe the new soundsoap will be better?

Why are you getting pops in your recordings?
What's your definition of a pop?

Pops defined....

Postby MediaUnion » Thu Dec 04, 2003 7:16 pm

Hey Scoot,

Every once in a while I get a spike while recording.
I can't recreate them. Thought they might be the furnace or Dishwasher but they weren't on.

I just want to be able to quickly remove them when they do appear.

There seems to be a few PeeCee apps that do this. I haven't seen
anything for the Mac yet.

Slow hard disk struggling to keep up?

I thought you may have been talking about digital distortion or something.....like when the rec volume is set too high.

Kevin,

With normal working audio hardware You should not see discontinuities in your audio stream. Perhaps your hard disk needs to be defragged or there is a problem with your audio hardware. What is your hardware setup?

Noixes in the machine...

Postby MediaUnion » Fri Dec 05, 2003 1:35 am

Hi Scoot and Jerm,

I have a iMac G4 800 Mz, 60 Gig, (30 Avail) OsX 10.2.8.

The issue I think is the AudiophileUSB. This is my second one.

The first just died when it was less than a month old. This second one during my last project would do weird things.

During recording and punch-ins, the first take had no distortion or buzz or hum. We'd want to redo the punch (never less than 10 bars) and with no settings touched, the next punch would have all sorts of distortion, pops and buzzes.

The pops would sound like a bad guitar cord except it repeated like it was looped. The buzz was like a SMPTE / midi stripe or clock.

I tried quitting Metro, shutting down, restarting the AudiophileUSB, even updated the driver to 1.5.7f1. It was still sketchy from take to take. I found the way to make it stop without shutting down by saving the song. Open a different song, record a couple of seconds of something. Save it and go back to the original song. That was a quick workaround while in a session.

I have those bad files still in my project folder.
I don't know if they would they help.

BTW... I really am thinking of plunking down cash for a multi in interface but have just started the shopping process. Firewire or usb? Driver issues? Throughput pros and cons? Will 4 be enough inputs...?

I don't have anything other than the built-in in/out on my old G4 but I've seen enough posts to have an opinion.

Firewire over USB......I think I'd still say that even if you had USB 2.0.

I would potentially have the option to go to something internal with PCI in my current computer, but if I was to get an ibook or imac I would lose the PCI....so I would be looking at something with firewire, so I could carry it onto the next purchased mac.

4 inputs is enough if that is what you need.
If you're a musician who is just recording say - vocal and guitar, then 4 is more than enough!

If you think in the near future you would need more, then don't buy a 4 input device and keep saving your money for 8.
Buy a device that can be expanded/joined with others......such as a MOTU 828.........(this is not a recommendation but an example. You need to buy what best suits your needs from all the specs available).

Onboard mic pres or another device to do it would be a consideration.

Then again I could change everything I said above and say - if you wanted one device to do it all get a USB US-428 as it can be a controller, midi in/out and audio source.........but I thought your question was more toward a higher number of audio ins........a more pro-sumer situation.

Hey Scoot,

Thanks for the info. I have been looking at the 828mkII because
you never know when you'll need that 5th, or 8th, or 16th input...

I like the idea of the flexible chaining with the firewire. I assume Metro would support two 828s chained (Jerm?). But... you could add 8 tracks cheaper for the cost of a used ADAT and use the 828's ADATsync.

I'm starting to see musicians who are willing to bring their computer/interface to a session so "chain-able" (is that a real word???) i/o gear is a new requirement for me. (interconnectivity)

I'll let you know how it goes.
