adjusting gain

Postby Jin » Fri Apr 23, 2004 1:13 am

This is probably a stupid question, but I'm a newbie to Metro... 2 days strong to be exact.

Is it possible to adjust the gain (or volume) of an individual track or .aif file that is already imported into Metro SE?

And if so does this degrade the sound quality a lot?

heaps,

oops nevermind, I just found the edit/audio/scale amplitude pop-up menu. Seems to work rather nicely.

*Anyone on hear produce Progressive House or Tech House with Metro? I'm interested in hearing, swapping, and learning what you persons are putting out there.*

Jin,

The best way to adjust gain is to use the mixer window. First assign the track to a Metro Audio Output by clicking in the output column of the tracks window. Then go to the Mixer window and move the fader up and down to control the volume.

If you cannot get enough volume from the original audio track try using normalize. This will bring the volume of the track to its maximum (when set to 100%) without adding any digital distortion.

I don't know how far you've got into Metro but you could do this.
I'll give you a quick run through of using a plug in.

- get your audio into metro and lets say its on track 1.

- go to the windows menu and open the "plugins" and "effects/synths" windows (Command 9 & Zero)
The top of the effects/synth window displays the track number and its name. (make sure this matches with the one you want to modify....track1 for now).

- go to the plugins window and drag Apple's AUGraphicEQ into the effects/synths window

- clicking on its edit button in the effects/synths window brings up a window in which you can change settings for this plugin.

- play your audio track and make adjustments and you'll hear the changes.

The cool thing is when you remove the plugin the audio returns to normal and is unaffected..........or you could decide to leave it their, or to save CPU power, record the changes onto another audio track.

This was just a quick demo and not the plug in you were after, but I just wanted to show a plugin that can make a big change quickly.

For gain - my suggestion is go to http://www.digitalfishphones.com/
enter the site and click on the audio plugins. Go to the fish fillets and download the free plugins. They do de-essing, compressing and limiting. You can't go wrong.

Another thing to try is going to the plugins window and grabbing the AUMatrixReverb. It can add nice touches.....even with the plate or small room. If you like this kind of thing, go to http://www.silverspike.com/Download/download.html and download RoomMachine 844.

Now you've got a busy weekend.

have fun

As far as house music goes you could build them in the graphic editor quite easily with midi and the internal sound sets.

pick out the nasty electronic drum kit out of the quicktime instruments

in the graphic editor, to the right of R M S and the bar length, go to notes and change it to drums.

new drum on the left allows you to select the parts of the kit you want to use and then its just a matter of making vast, repeative beats hehehe.

if you select the pencil tool, click on the drum name on the left, metro will start placing beats on the grid based on the current note length.

we expect a few number one hits from you by the end of the weekend.

Hey I hadn't seen these free plug-ins before. Very nice. I will add a link to our links page.

Thanks Scoot :D

Roommachine is a little too good to avoid. :D

sorry a little off topic.

A note about the fishfillets - While on osxaudio.com, reading about zebra 1.5 coming out, I went to the site.

They have good links there at http://www.u-he.com/ and in the audio units section is says "as you might know, I have ported several plugins by DigitalFishPhones to the VST-Mac platform. The FishFillets have already been AUified, the other stuff will go AU as well. Don't ask me when..."

and if you look below this you see Metro.

Yes, off topic, and yes. Zebra 1.5 is a MONSTER synth. This thing is simply incredible.

wowza!! thanks guys, you two are on point.

I had success with just using normalize and scale amplitutude, and now I am playing with the suggestions Mr. Scoot made. I am definitely impressed with the "plugins" and "effects/synths" windows. That built in apple EQ is perfect. Plus, it gives me a lot more control over the quality than just raising the overall gain/wave amplitude.

Looks like you've opened a whole new window of settings and gadgets for me to play with.

a proper thanks once again, I definitely know where to inquire about any further unchartered areas of Metro SE.
