Metro Scoring

Postby aokjoey » Thu Jan 08, 2004 10:03 am

I have the SE version and am very interested in learning how to score. I figure that being able to score in Metro and have it play it back would be a great learning tool. I would like to do full orchestra scoring, but will definitely start with single instruments and small ensembles.

I'm interested in general impressions of the scoring.

I'm also interested in learning how much detail can be translated from notation to actual playing by Metro.

I'm also open to suggestions for orchestral modules or soft syths that others may have used.

Thanks!
Joe

To get used to it, do you have a music book?

Inputing some of it may help you understand how to go about doing it in metro and how to get better at it.

Notation in Demo?

Postby aokjoey » Thu Jan 08, 2004 4:31 pm

I downloaded the Full version demo and the notation/lyric menu items were grayed out. I need to try this before I upgrade from SE. Is it possible to try these?

Did you install the fonts properly? Did you get a message saying that Aloisen could not be found?

I just tried it and it works for me.

The demo is 6.1.0.5 unless it was downloaded a while back.

Thanks to all. I did get it to work (missing font - the folder should be renamed, though).

My initial reactions are mixed. It's easy enough and very intuitive. My only disappointment (and it's kind of a big one) is that things like repeat symbols and volume changes don't modify the actual track.

It's good for the other direction, where you're playing something on keyboards and it comes out notated in a basic format. Then it becomes a word processor for preparing notation for real musicians.

I'm trying to have the sequencer play the score as accurately as possible. Certainly it should handle structure-related notation like repeats.

aokjoey,

i'm a french horn player and as such have been in and out of orchestras my whole life (even though that's not the kind of music i do now...) and i've been writing (as in with pencil and manuscript paper) almost as long. so my concept of how to write for an orchestra comes from actually playing in them.

that said, the technique i use is to "write" what i want the way i'd want it to appear on paper in a music notation program (like Sibelius or Finale though there are others), THEN export it as a midi file (one track per instrument unless you like to group the strings or woodwinds under one patch or sumthin') into your sequencer and tweak it until it SOUNDS like you want it to.

music notation is notoriously inexact and that's not something sequencers deal well with. i find it amazing that the notation programs playback as well as they do (and they're getting better). sequencers, otoh, deal with commands. pretty explicit commands. so, for me anyway, it's best to use each tool for what it does best.
