Is there an easy way to completely turn off the metronome so it won't sound before recording while in wait mode.

Phil,

I don't think it sounds in wait mode but rather in count off mode. Try setting the metronome velocities to 0.

It also sounds while in wait mode unless you set all velocities to 0. I never use the metronome so this will work for me.
