Bounce!

Ok, I never made an mp3 of anything I have ever made in Metro.

However, I import a midifile, and want to bounce it to AIFF. I can't. I checked all the damn menus, the doc, the forums etc. No way. I can do that on an audio track, not in MIDI. Not for the whole SET of tracks. Even if the MIDI track is playing via the AU SF2 player.

Whats the trick ? Care about making it obvious?

(FYI I was demoying how Metro was so much more useful than GarageBand, until that someone asked me for the mp3 of the result..)

BusError,

Yes you can do that.

If the MIDI is from an external synth you will need to record the output as audio like other audio tracks.

If the MIDI is a softsynth then you should use Mix and Render tracks from the file menu. This will mix the selected time and tracks to the specified bit size and sample rate. Note that softsynth tracks will get mixed regardless if they are selected or not so if you want certain tracks simply mute the ones you do not want.

The resultant AIF file is ready for import into iTunes or other MP3 making application.

The first time I used Mix and Render tracks (well whatever the old name was) under soundfonts, I thought wow this is a really cool feature.

And if you've got a fast machine it can produce the result very quickly.
The thing that stopped me doing it the first time was not having the audio track record enabled. duh!

scoot.

PS.
garageband (bashing?)
http://www.macintouch.com/garageband.html
seems as if a dual G4 500 is a minimum requirement for multitracks and a G3 600mhz is just a plain joke.

To use Mix or Render Audio Tracks you do not need a record-enabled track.

Yeah. That's right. There is also an option where you can record any Core Audio output directly by selecting the option in the input record source column of the tracks window. In this special case it will record the output that is selected on the current track directly from the final output stage (post mix).

render and mix

Postby juanchamo » Sat Jan 24, 2004 5:51 pm

Hi,
I've got the demo version of Metro SE and I can try the render/mix command.
I've got a 500 Mhz G3 white ibook and I wonder if it is fast enough to render and mix tracks into a sound file without failing.
I know that when the CPU fails even for a tenth of a second, the problem is going to show in the final sound file.
Do you think my ibook is fast enough to handle the task?
Would I get good sound files, I mean without the little skips where the CPU failed to keep up with the rendering and mixing task?
I ask because I have experienced that kind of problem with other music software.
Thanks
Juan

Juan,

When mixing files or softsynths to audio you should NEVER get any skips or pops because of (CPU) processor speed or hard disk speed. The reason is because the process does not have to happen within any specific time restraints as it would if it were rendering in real time. In real time sound must be processed by the sample rate.

If the process of mixing takes longer than real time it does not matter. There is a known problem (at apple) with the DLS-Soundfont plug-in where it will not render properly in certain cases (namely when the quality is lowered) when NOT in real time. That is why we implemented the direct to from output port recording. This function will be affected by real time constraints.

I am very surprised that you can Mix audio tracks in the demo. If you can then this is a problem because you are not supposed to be able to.

Hi,
Thanks for your technical explanations.
I can't mix tracks in the demo. Don't worry about that, he he! That's why I'm asking.
So, technical details apart, do you think I'll be able to mix my audio and MIDI tracks into a sound file without getting skips or pops? Please remember I've got a G3 500 Mhz ibook.
I plan to get the Metro SE commercial version and I'd like to check this out before getting it.
Thanks
Juan

Yes. You will be limited to a certain number of tracks before you will need to mix them down but there will not be any artifacts from mixing audio.
