I guess you get a lot of messages and they're slow to read.

I noticed someone was somehow hacking into the private messaging system, using it to send messages without registering so I disabled it.

I see.

Maybe if the permissions were changed so you have to log in to even read the board, it may stop the problem.

I have my forums set up so no guest can write a message (and I think the same applies here) but maybe the above solution is a little extreme.

The PM's are not really needed if people have an email.
