Audio and Midi Tracks Drifting Apart Metro 4.5

Postby elp121 » Sat Jan 10, 2004 8:23 pm

I am recording a MIDI drum track first, then recording audio tracks. Everything seems to be in sync fine and then will suddenly start drifting apart after a minute or so. This problem has been happening intermittently, but enough to be very frustrating. Anyone else experienced this problem? Any helpful suggestions appreciated. Thanks!

What model mac is it and how many MHz does it have?
Decent amount of ram?
Virtual memory turned off?
Is everything on one hard disk - the system and the recording?

How many audio tracks are running at the time when they start drifting?
Do you hear the audio breaking up or cutting out and then continuing?

What audio devices are you using? Make sure to use only one audio device.

It's a Power Mac 8500 with a 400 MHZ Sonnet G3 Upgrade
144 MB RAM, everything is on the same disk, virtual memory off.
The audio doesn't cut out at all. It has happened with as few as two tracks of audio and one track of MIDI. Today I was up to three tracks of audio and two MIDI tracks, it was all playing back in sync OK, I took a break for an hour or so and came back to do a retake after deleting two of the audio tracks with performance mistakes, then upon completing the retake, the playback was in sync for a minute, then very quickly drifted off.

I then deleted everything except for the MIDI drum track, layed down three new audio tracks and everything is synced OK so far. Tomorrow could be different however, quite maddening.

I'm using the RCA inputs on the stock audio card on the 8500. Also using Portastudio 488 as a mixing board into the RCAs.

Make sure in timing preferences that Extended time manager is selected.

How is the MIDI drum track routed?

The drum track is routed to an Alesis SR-16 as a sound module.
I had the Extended Time Manager previously selected. I've been recording audio in mono instead of stereo the last several days and have not had any more problems. Thanks for responding and your help.
