Offline Effects bug

Postby axnyslie » Sun Oct 19, 2003 1:21 am

I can't make the offine effects process right for me on OS 9 or X Everything works OK until I process it then the waveform gain slams hard creating monster distortion. Am I missing something where the levels should be set?

Can you walk me through what you're doing?

For instance I just opened an stereo audio AIFF file, selected a few bars of it, went to the edit menu, chose audio plugins, selected Apple AU Matrix Reverb, chose the settings, previewed it, hit ok and it made the changes just fine.

I would have thought that if you were using a plugin that has level adjustments in it, these would dictate the outcome of the audio signal afterwards.

I processed a file through the exact steps that you described. Everything sounds right in the preview mode and when I process it I get a big solid block of massive clipping.

This happens with all FX, Apples built-in and 3rd party plug-ins.

What is the sample rate, number of channels (mono/stereo) and bit size of the source audio region?

What version of Metro?

If you are using OS 10.1.5 or earlier I would strongly recommend getting 10.2.

I've been using 24bit 96khz and 24 bit 44.1khz files stereo and mono

Version 6.0.8.2 of Metro and Mac OS 10.2.8 and 9.2.2

same results on all configurations

As you're up with 10.2.8, are you also running QT 6.4?

Found this little tidbit on macintouch which is about maxing volume and could be related to your problem and involve more circumstances than just the one below............

[Brant Faircloth] Following iTunes and QT update on my box yesterday PM, i ran across an interesting problem wit volume levels from the computer, particularly the headphone jack.
If you are playing a song (or any file w/ vol. for that matter), and you plug in your headphones, the vol. will increase to max level on the phones. unplugging them will cause the computer speaker volume to increase to max, as well. The volume keys on the keyboard have no effect, but the volume sliders in the pref. panes for sound do decrease the volume. However, changes in the pref. panes are overridden once the volume keys on the keyboard are touched.
Upon posting to the Apple Discussion forums ("iTunes and headphone line out"), Lucas Thompson made a quick inspection of the *.bom files for the update (in /Library/Receipts). Apparently, the QT update affects several audio frameworks and core audio resources. However, a quick fix has not yet been identified.

Joe,

It is a bug. If you convert to 32 bit before processing it will work. You can do this will Mix Audio Tracks. This will be fixed in 6.1.0.3.

Okay. This has been fixed for 6.1.0.3. Note that another work around is to place the plug-in as a realtime plug-in (into the effects window) and then use Mix Audio Tracks to render the output. This method currently works for 24 bit audio.

Joe,

6.0.8.3 is already available. I think you probably mean 6.1.0.3.

6.1.0.3 will most likely be available as a pre-release within the next 10 days or so, perhaps sooner.
